OVERVIEW:
The cardiac catheterization laboratory, or cath lab, is one of the busiest and most device-intensive areas of the hospital. This report provides product suppliers with information obtained directly from 119 cath lab directors concerning procedure volumes and trends, product and supplier preferences, product purchase decision-making responsibilities, and factors impacting cath lab operations and performance.

Some of the specific findings that came directly from the survey include:

*The average number of cardiac catheterizations performed by cath labs per week was 30.4, and the average number of therapeutic interventions was 11.8. Considering the fact that three-quarters of responding labs have two or fewer catheterization suites, this represents a high level of efficiency.

*Coronary angiography was the only procedure performed by all survey respondents, and it totally dominates the procedure caseload with average monthly performance more than twice that of any other procedure.

*Materials managers and purchasing departments have a surprisingly small say in the selection of cath lab products.

*Technological factors were especially important in 1997 and 1998, with a minimum of 75% of survey respondents indicating that the introduction and inservicing of new technology substantially or greatly impacted their day-to-day operations during this time period.

*Approximately 50% of cath lab respondents planned to add new transcatheter procedures to their service offerings throughout the year 2001.
